Carriage Hill Names Facility Wings

By Sara Nadeau

Last week, I wrote about how we chose the name Carriage Hill Assisted Living as a tribute to my grandfather who was a wheelwright and restored carriages in his retirement. In that spirit, we have named the three wings of our building after different carriage styles: Meadowbrook, Landau and Surrey. Landau is the front wing that houses our main entrance, Administrator and Director of Nursing offices, sunroom and library. Surrey is the back, “cat friendly” wing. Meadowbrook is the front wing that houses the combination dining room/family room, kitchen, private dining room, treatment room and hair salon.

My grandfather did restore and build several Meadowbrook carriages. Surrey’s are well known from movies such as Oklahoma that featured the song with the lyrics “Surrey with the fringe on top”. Landau may be less well known (more prevalent in Europe) but is an enclosed, decorative carriage. My brother-in-law, Fred Nadeau, is currently making an original painting of each of these carriages to be featured at the entrance of each wing. We’re pleased to pay tribute to this historical past with the naming of our wings and hope this is a unique feature that will appeal to our residents choosing senior housing in New Hampshire.
